Stone, Cloth, Box Story

In this task for writers for designers we were supposed to have a story done which we were going to illustrate and then shoot the video based on the story.

With that understanding, i then got my concept ready and this was going to be the story i was going to use to have my video done.

Being close buddies has the consequences of breaking friendship through petty fights or sometimes large ones and this was one that almost ended Brizzo's and Muzo's friendship. The two were inseparable but one argument left one sad and started to reflect on past activities they did together.

Muzo had flipped over Brizzo on something that escalated and left Muzo chasing Brizzo away and with a friendship like theirs, Brizzo was touched by this. Walking into his room, he entered and saw the memories box where he kept some of his stuff that him and Muzo had encountered. He approached the box and held it and there was a sad and hurt guy who just sat down and reflected on what looked like something he didnt expect.

Opening the box slowly and just the look on his face, one could easily tell, this was deeply touching. Reading a letter Muzo had sent him a long time ago made a little smile on Brizzo and then he went through some of his pocket change and came across the stone which he remembered like a dream where the two walked very happy like it was never a dull day, at the pond, bonding and throwing pebbles across the water, Brizzo then snapped back to reality and then smiled and totally realised the fight was pointless. Later touching the cloth he then remembered his birthday present which Muzo had blind folded him and just showed him what he had always wanted, such a happy face with a big smile, his emotions were pricessless. Finally laughing at Muzo's passport photo which was in the box, Brizzo was enlightened and could smile after such a bad fight. Suddenly, a knock is heard and Brizzo approaches the door. The best friend but at that moment, enemy Muzo comes in and looks equally as sad as Brizzo and then just gets to his senses and realises what happened was wrong and they did not need to fight which leads to Muzo apologising to Brizzo and the two finally making up.

The full video was directed and edited by Th33 Brizz and you can click here to watch the full video.

Digital & Traditional Art

In this task, we were told to discuss as to how the modern art of nowadays is different from the art or designs from back then which root as the 'traditional' and how programs like Photoshop and the likes have affected designs.

From my understanding,

Traditional Art :  is the use of media that does not require any technology, a graphics program but consists more of items such as paint, crayons, pencils, paper etc. These elements to bring out the 'rawness' of a design.

Digital Art : by the name, Digital, its easy to tell it uses software i.e Photoshop, Illustrator etc to bring out a design. This is how the days of today are being done. People can now draw on the PC without paper and even color and bring it to life without any stress just by clicking, drawing using the program tools.

But both descriptions are art. I say this because we still bring out a design, either by traditional form or digital. One will still have a piece of work that will be appreciated. Just the method which will matter as some would say the digital lacks 'creativity' or took less time to finish than traditional if given same task to do e.g a drawing of something.

Examples of these types of arts are shown below :

Fig. 1

Fig. 2

As we can see from the above pictures, these are hand drawn images. The shades on them give them that artistic look that they have.
In comparison with these drawings, the type of shading, lining in Fig 1 is different from Fig 2. This can shown by the quality of work that is shown, Fig 1 gives that professional look by paying attention to detail where as Fig 2 has that rough look where the artist was sketching something fast, with reoccurring lines and quick shading.

With digital art, as we know uses these programs that us programs use, Photoshop, Illustrator etc to come up with these cool graphics. Using reference with the traditional art images, i searched for similar art but in digital form to showcase how one can add even more detail by use of the program.

Fig. 1.1

Fig. 2.1

From the images above, it is easy to tell that these pictures have been given a digital enhancement. The amount of detail in Fig 1.1 with adding scenery, clouds, floating highlands, all those are digitally done to give the effect the artist is looking for. As well as giving it a 3D feel and make it look real life but in the sense of being animation. In Fig 2.1 we see more detail, color, and the realism in the image by the details in the eyes, different shades of it, the contour of shading down the lines and everything. If you look closely, it is not 100% sharp as such and could have been given a painting type of feel in the editing software.

With both traditional and digital art being compared and can see the difference in both and how designers may start off by drawing just by using normal materials like pencils and such then move on and finish the art in a program to give it more detail and feel to their design.

Online Journals

In this task, we were told to look out at the difference between a journal and an article and also state whats in each one and also read one and also make reference to one and talk about whats in one.

With that in line, comparison i made was journal articles contain original research and have been peer-reviewed which means that an anonymous person in the field has read it over and checked it for mistakes. Magazine articles don't present original research (for the first time, anyway) and have not been peer-reviewed.

We were then told to read a journal and then summarize or mention what we understood by reading all this. For that, since i have an interest in photography, video editing etc. I chose to have a look at an online journal on photography.

This the online blog where I was going to read and see what this had to offer : http://www.bjp-online.com/

Reading from this journal i got to know multiple works by people that I have never heard of and the repetition of these names showed me that they were actually famous for their works. An example was Max Pinckers, a Belgian photographer who won an award for one of his best images. This is the picture that got him the prize :

Reading the journal more also gave me more understanding of shooting techniques like portrait, landscape and the likes. It was widely spread with different tabs which were linked by multiple pages with this information.

So this blog actually is one that one can look at and see what is happening around the world because it is currently updated with new works and may help the upcoming or already established photographers out there learn a few things or two and also post their own stuff as well.

Childhood Game

In this task, we were told to choose a childhood game that we like and then from there give it elements that can change the game and make it better and interesting.

With that taken note of, my choice of game was 'Truth Or Dare'. The reasons of the game were :

  • Was a popular game with children and still is.
  • Easy to play with a certain number of people.
  • Fun and cant get boring as easily.
Ways in which i was going to make this game better were :

  •  To have a more organised selection of the 'dares' that are done in the game. I was to have a deck of cards with certain dares where the selected person picks from the deck for his dare when the bottle spins on him.
  • To refine the game more, i was going to have  a set of players, 6 max sit around in a circle with a spin board having 'truth' or 'dare' on it. There after, a bottle will be spun and the first spin will indicate which player is to be chosen. After that, the selected player then spins the bottle on the spin board and waits to see what his option will be, either 'truth' or 'dare' Thereafter, he picks out his optional card from the deck and does what is required.
Sketches of how the game would look are down below including mind maps and ideas of the game.

In thoughts of how i was going to package the game and the outcome of it. I thought about these points :

  • What bottle would i use?
  • Will it attract alot of people to play?
  • Will be as easy-to-do type of game?
  • Is this game worth changing?

With those points in analysis i then later changed the game and gave it a twist, not only just emphasizing on the 'dare' part of the game, i added the 'truth or 'dare' element onto which i would fuse in both games and make them one and more interesting. Reasons for this are :

  • More tasks to do (Truth included)
  • Would have a sensible packaging
  • Would be able to pull in a sensible crowd
  • Adds more flavor with both games fused in one.
The ways i was going to enhance the game are listed below :

  • Going to have a set cards, two decks which will include 'truth' and 'dare' and they would be atleast be 10 each.
  • The bottle will be used to pick out the player in the game and also the option either truth or dare.
How the game would be played - is more defined with what i would refine.

  • 6 players sit around a circle.
  • Bottle is spun to select the player.
  • Selected player then spins for the options on the board, 'truth' or 'dare'.
  • Selected player then picks out his card from either of the options and carries it out.
  • Game continues after player is done.
After analyzing that, had to come up with a certain mood or feel that i would to my game. This called for a moodboard to be made and this would show a general type of feel of what my game would have. I wanted my game to have a retro/pop feeling to it. This meant to have a variety of colors, bright colors, some repeatation of designs and vibrant colors. After taking down all that, this was my mood board for my game.

One can see my choice of colors was bright, red, yellow, blue, purple being some of the colors you would notice at first sight. For me, this was a foundation where i can lay my design and work around this so that i can have consistence around my work and not show different variations of my work.

Mood board done, I then started to create my game box, which was going to have a lid (30CM x 30CM) and a bottom ( 28.5CM x 28.5CM) where all my stuff was to go in. After getting my specifications right and my spin board of 26CM x 26CM, my design started.

Front Design

My front design was one that was going to give out the game to a customer where when they see it, they get attracted to it and want to see more.

  • Used color red for my main feel to have that 'alarming' feel to a customer
  • Different colors in boxes to give that retro design.
  • Text with shadows of different colors to show variation of vibrance feel in colors.
  • Graphical content the lips and question marks in the boxes were to emphasize more on the 'truth' or 'dare' feel. The lips showing where the dare would be out of the lips the question mark to show one not knowing what they'll pick or what dare/truth they'll be asked.
Bottom Design

My bottom design was more simple and didnt have much detail on it besides the game lables that were to be on the sides, this was to save on time and the game giving out to much detail.

Spin Board

My spin board was going to give it the 'wow' when you open the box, where as the red gave it that alarming to see the game, the spin board doesnt just give out the same red feel as the front and bottom but different colors as well to show the colorful side of the game. Different colors were used to compliment each other as can see and the text around was to show where the bottle would point when spun.

Card Design

The above are the cards that will be placed in the box, the truth or dare cards. Different coloring but same design was to show the different cards but still show consistence.

With those designs laid out and design it was time to place these on the board that was going to use to apply these stickers onto the board.

This was the final product of my packaging of the game :

Packaging Product Part 2

With correspondence with the last packaging task, this one was to show how we could improve the packaging of the latter and make it more consumable, earth friendly etc.

For that i chose the Fabuloso packaging which originally was looking like this :

Some of the problems that i saw on this product were listed before but to remind you these are :

  • The name itself throws it off by giving this 'fabulous' feel to it.
  • The packaging and how the bottle of choice is used, plastic to be precise.
  • Different colors for different flavors and those same flavors having the smell of their corresponding color.
To enhance the packaging of this and knowing what this brand was, this product was is a house cleaning substance which should give a 'cleaning' and more strong feel to this. And hence for that, i sketched out one of the new packages i would use for such a design.

I also referred to the internet with some images of detergent packages and you could see, the are alike in a way.

This choice of look was going to give it a more mature look and not distinguish the 'drink' reaction it gave. Some of the changes that could be made were :

  • Make the bottle a specific color, grey, white or black and to distinguish the different flavors, the bottle top/bottle could be different color.

The above are some of the designs could have for the brand name, just an idea. And not only that, but the packaging would be made of material that is recyclable which would be more economical.

Packaging Product

In this task, we were told to look at shopping products that we find in shops  and have a review on the product itself, packaging design and relevant things towards our study. With that in line, my choice of products are listed below

  • House hold cleaning product/detergent.

  1. Fabuloso
Just by reading the name, one can really think that this is one good and fabulous product you would find in the shop. Attractive? Yes, it is actually but this product gives out the wrong impression one should have about a detergent. The packaging of this product is not one you would expect of a detergent to be branded in such a manner.

With such a colorful packaging, one can think this is a soft drink at fight sight. And that is not a wrong impression you a buyer can get by this product.

  • The name itself throws it off by giving this 'fabulous' feel to it.
  • The packaging and how the bottle of choice is used, plastic to be precise.
  • Different colors for different flavors and those same flavors having the smell of their corresponding color.

Can see from the picture above, the bottles look like energy drinks that can be drunk by people from people and this can cause an effect because of the ingredients found in such a cleaning product.

BICARBONATE OF SODA is one of the ingredients found in this and this quite harmful because it has effects once in-digested. Some of these are :

  • Heartburn - Heartburn and acid indigestion are two gastrointestinal problems often treated with antacids that contain bicarbonate of soda. It neutralizes the stomach acid and provides pain relief. Bicarbonate of soda can cause a laxative effect, however, especially when larger or prolonged doses are taken.
  • Stomach And Duodenal Ulcers - Bicarbonate of soda is also used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers. Ulcers are areas in the stomach or duodenum where the lining has been eaten away, resulting in pain and bleeding. Bicarbonate of soda relieves ulcer pain. So taking this without caution can cause overdose.
  • Water Pollution - This is a product that will be eventually thrown away after cleaning maybe outside, go down the drain etc. And with the content, this may cause water pollution as it flows threw water pipes etc. Because of acidity mixed with other products, it may be harmful too.
Some outline effects of this ingredient outlined above and to think that this product has never been drunk before, well it has. Statistics show that children below the age of 6 have actually had a taste of this 'fabulous' drink.

"Interestingly, adults accidentally exposed to this product were primarily female (29 of 39 [74%]), whereas children <6 years of age were primarily males (45 of 60 [75%]). "

Can see numbers of the children of 6 years were actually higher than older people. This product also recorded atleast 94 cases of drinking this product of release in first four months and the group of most cases were children below 6.

"But researchers with the American College of Emergency documented 94 cases of accidental ingestion during the first four months of the year across Texas. Many were children under 6, the group said."

After outlining this product and seeing what harm it can be done to people and the environment around. Some improvments that may or could be done are :

  • Changing the brand name to something more related to the use of the product e.g 'Cleanso' but still having the 'fabulouso' sound.
  • Instead of using plastic bottle to present this, a canned bottle will be appropriate and not to show that drink packaging.
  • Sticking to one color of the bottles and maybe highlighting the colors of the flavors around the lid or on the sticker would be good than the customer seeing the whole liquid.
